Today’s FNC session has revealed that 20.8 per cent of UAE Nationals are unemployed.
The issue was brought up by Ali Al Nuaimi (Ajman), an FNC member, who said that according to the UAE National Bureau of Statistics, unemployment rate has increased from 13 per cent that was previously presented to the council.
However, the Minister of Labour ,Mr.Saqr Ghobash told the council not to get alarmed as the figure needed to be analysed.
“The problem we face is not that there are no jobs,” the minister said. “There are jobs, but Emiratis don’t accept these jobs. This is the challenge we face.”
According to the minister there are mainly two reasons for these ‘alarming’ figures – geographic and gender ties.
Apparently, there are more unemployed nationals in areas like Fujairah, Khorfakkan, and Ras Al Khaimah due to lack of job opportunities in these areas. In addition, 38% of them are women who have difficulty in moving to other places where jobs are available.
The minister however acknowledged the problem and said it was vital to tackle the issue of unemployment. He expressed optimism and expected the “real number” of UAE nationals looking for work to be far less in the coming years especially due to the government’s Emiratisation initiatives.
