Center of Waste Management Joins Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group
Move to Support Sustainable Development Roadmap of Abu Dhabi Vision 2030
The Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi today announced it has joined the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group in line with its strategy to share expertise and knowledge with public and private sector organizations in the emirate towards realizing the sustainable development objectives of Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.
Dr Salem Al Kaabi, Deputy General Manager, at The Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi, said: “The Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi and the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group of share a mutual goal of contributing to the sustainable development mandate outlined in Abu Dhabi Vision 2030. The Group mandates its members to adopt sustainable management practices, conduct an evaluation of environmental, economic and social performance, as well as issue an annual report of their achievements in the space.
“These are practices that we, at the Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi, have consistently promoted through our community initiatives in the emirate. I am confident that building on the joint efforts of the members of the Group, we will make significant strides in accomplishing our goals.”
Dr Jaber Al Jabri, Deputy Secretary General, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), said: “We welcome the Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi to the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group. This step demonstrates the organization’s commitment towards sustainable management and its efforts to frame policies on the basis of economic, environmental and social performance that drive the Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.
“Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group seeks to encourage sustainable management in the emirate through providing opportunities for the exchange of knowledge between private and government organizations. The Group has hosted a number of training workshops, featuring experts in sustainability to coach members on sustainable management. The workshops have also offered insights on compiling sustainability reports based on global best practices in line with the Global Reporting Initiative.”
The Center of Waste Management – Abu Dhabi aims to ensure effective waste management across the emirate to position it among the foremost global destinations in sustainable development. The Center also seeks to inculcate a sustainable culture in Abu Dhabi that includes the reduction of waste production from source, as well as the reuse and recycling of materials. In parallel to these efforts, the Center hosts periodic awareness programs to educate and encourage the community towards the adoption of such practices.
Established in 2008, the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Group is an initiative run under the government’s guidance, drawing the support of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. In addition to empowering the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi to develop and implement best standards, the program mandates the use of cutting-edge technology to increase Abu Dhabi’s competitiveness in global markets. The Group also aims to strengthen partnerships between government and community, as well as promote private and nongovernment organizations to conserve the environment in the interest of the community.
