17th July, 2011, Abu dhabi : It was a fun-filled day for hundreds of students of UAE today. A mega cultural event organized by Innovative Development Centre for Educational Aptitude (IDEA) at the magnificent campus of Abu Dhabi Indian School, the IDEA UAE OPEN TALENT SEARCH is an entirely non-profit voluntary event conducted by the organizers of IDEA to encourage, recognize and appreciate outstanding performers in a wide range of fields such as Literary Arts, Elocution, Drawing and Painting, and Quiz Competitions.
This is a one-day event conducted once every year and students from schools all over the United Arab Emirates participate in the competitions. Multinational students right from grades 1 to 12 participate in the event. This year the IDEA Open Talent Search celebrates its 4th anniversary.
The event was held under the kind patronage of H.E Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The event was sponsored by Honeywell Process Solutions, Al Faraa Group, and Global Printing Press.
The event was inaugurated by the Ambassador of India to the UAE, Mr M.K. Lokesh. The participation was huge in number, with almost 2500 students of various nationalities from 69 schools from all seven emirates, showing up for the event to demonstrate their talents. There were a total of 16 categories of competitions. It was indeed endearing to watch little toddlers of 5 and 6 years unleash their box of colours, screw up their eyebrows, put out their tongue and draw and colour in earnest. Similarly, it was quite amazing to watch the literary minds at work at the poetry writing competition. Children exhibited their creativity and caliber with words after being given a topic on the spot and being asked to write a poem within a span of an hour. Dr Tayeb Kamali, Vice-Chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, accompanied by few organizers of IDEA, visited the campus and went around witnessing the various events that were in progress.
The competition that stole the show was the Quiz competition conducted live on stage in the evening, where 16 children forming 8 teams, fought for the winning positions. The finalists for the stage round were selected after many challenging preliminary rounds. Only the best made it till the finals. The knowledge and awareness in today?s generation was remarkably impressive and note-worthy.
The enthusiasm of the IDEA organizers is also commendable. Mr. Ashok Pillai, Executive Director at Armed Forces Officers Club, Abu Dhabi, as well as one of the Chief Organizers and founders of IDEA, said, ?We have been conducting this event every year for the past four years now. The response from students has been amazing. We look to nurture creativity and talent in the youth.?
The glittering awards presentation ceremony was presided over by Dr. Mark Drummond, Pro Vost, Higher Colleges of Technology. The awards were presented to winners in 5 categories (divided age-wise) for all competitions. Apart from that, all participating students were presented with a Participation Certificate. In addition to the students, the ceremony was attended by a large number of teachers and visitors. Mr. Krishnamurthy, Hon President of IDEA welcomed the Guest of Honour, Mr. Mark Drummond, and Mrs. Anita Butani, Hon. Secretary ended the event with the vote of thanks. To sum it up, the event was a huge success, conducted in a very organized manner with no mayhem or confusion despite the large number of students at the venue.
IDEA must indeed be congratulated and praised for conducting such a large event on a non-profit basis, which gives an opportunity for children to bring out their (often untapped) talents. It is pleasing to note that ever since its inception in 2004, the IDEA has been successfully conducting various student based programmes such as Career Guidance Forum, Education Exhibition, Talent Search, and other youth-focused seminars for the benefit of children.
