We review the DJI’s Osmo mobile 3 and find it’s a game-changer with its compact, super light weight, great battery life and affordable pricing.

For someone who jumped the bandwagon with DJI’s first mobile gimbal, the original ‘Osmo Mobile’, you can only imagine my excitement when they decided to launch the third generation of the same device. Osmo mobile 3 is a completely refined product with a ton of new features meant for those who are passionate about making professional videos using their smartphone.

Over the years, DJI as a brand has grown to become one of the market leaders in offering great innovation at affordable prices. When I purchased the Original Osmo Mobile about two years ago, it was roughly a thousand dirhams. The Osmo Mobile 3 retails for half that price with almost triple the features.

DJI Osmo Mobile 3 Highlights

• Quick Roll enables you to switch between portrait and landscape mode at the tap of a button
• ActiveTrack 3.0 is far more accurate and precise in tracking objects
• Foldable – so it doesn’t occupy as much as space as previous models
• Mimo App is far more user-friendly
• Plenty of story modes to choose from for professional grade videos
• Bluetooth 5.0

What we liked

• Incredibly portable
• Extremely easy to use
• Stellar battery life
• Affordable price point
• USB C Charging
• Brings back the trigger we lost in the second generation

What we didn’t like

• There seems to be a lot of features restricted to iOS only
• Tripod doesn’t fit in the case and needs to be carried separately
• Only one colour option
• Balancing the device is a little complicated
• Non-Removal Battery
• Tracking does seem a little finicky at times depending on lighting conditions

So What’s New with Osmo Mobile 3

Well to start with, a lot of new features and functionalities. Consider the third generation Osmo 3 as a more refined device packed with a lot of features to make your life easier. The previous generation Osmo had to manually remove the phone in order to switch between portrait and landscape mode. Not the case anymore. All it requires is a double tap of a button and the magic happens almost instantly.

Weighing just 405 grams, it is comfortable to hold in your hands for long hours as well ergonomically well position for that perfect grip. I mean, we all need that perfect stable shot don’t we? Again, everyone is entitled to their opinion but I actually like the plasticky feel of the Osmo mobile 3.

The new Mimo app is meant for those quick videos you just want to shoot and upload almost instantly with a few touches here and there. You can edit videos using the built in one tap templates and 90% of your work is already done. There are a bunch of royalty free music to choose from to get that ultimate polished result.

DJI promises 15 hours of battery life on a single charge which to me is colossal for a device of this size and thanks to the USB C port, you can have the device fully charged in just about two and a half hours.

For those of you who are still on the original ‘Osmo Mobile’, don’t think too much. This is the time to upgrade your gimbal at fraction of cost of the first generation Osmo mobile. The third generation gimbal is a massive upgrade from its previous models.

We’ve tested a lot of gimbals over the years from other brands like Zhiyun and we can confirm that the DJI Osmo Mobile 3 simply tops our charts. It’s compact, super light weight with great battery life and of course the affordable pricing.
