Dubai, United Arab Emirates, April 15, 2012:- DP World, UAE Region, has launched an awareness campaign at Al Hamriya Port to highlight the importance of adhering to health, environment and safety measures at the fishery port.
The campaign was conducted in cooperation with Dubai Municipality. Around 50 fishermen took part along with a number of Hamriya Port employees, working with employees from Dubai Municipality’s Waste, Pest Control, Health and Safety departments and representatives of the Dubai Fishermen Cooperative Association, and Hamriya Port.
Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said:
“We at DP World see the fishermen community as an integral part of Dubai’s marine heritage and industry. Hence, we are committed, as port operators, to providing fishermen with a sustainable, safe and healthy environment through both educating them and meeting their requirements. We thank Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Fishermen Cooperative Association for their continuous cooperation in helping us boost the fishermen’s sector in the emirate.”
In addition to serving the local fishing industry, Al Hamriya Port, which is located in Deira, off the north eastern coast of the city, plays a key role in facilitating non-containerised cargo movements between Dubai, Gulf ports and ports of East Africa. Food, automobile spare parts, and livestock comprise the bulk of trade through this port.
Work on upgrading the facility to bring it into the 21st century and provide value-added services to DP World, UAE Region’s customers started a few months ago. The decision to upgrade the traditional port came in response to the growing needs of fishermen and customers.
