Dubai Duty Free (DDF) posts record sales of $698 million (Dh2.548 million) in the first half of the year 2011. An impressive 16.6 per cent growth compared to the previous year.
The positive result is attributed to an increase in passengers at Dubai International Airport and there has been a significant increase in consumer spending on luxury goods.? Independent industry experts such as Generation Research places Dubai Duty Free ahead of Seoul Incheon Airport and London Heathrow. Both of them posted ?sales in excess of $1 billion last year.
Some of the top sellers at the DDF are perfumes, liquor, and gold. Gold sales increased by 24 per cent to reach Dh290 million, followed by perfumes, which increased by 20 per cent to reach Dh361 million.
The managing director, Colm McLoughlin estimates the total annual sales to reach $1.4 billion.
In other categories, electronic goods sales increased by 22 per cent to Dh196 million, while watch sales grew an impressive 41 per cent growth to Dh172 million.
Spending trends at terminals
Terminal 3 accounted for 60 per cent of the duty free sales in the first six months of the year, while Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 contributed 34.15 per cent and 6.42 per cent respectively. The arrival sales also showed an increase by 16 per cent.
