Held in Feb every year, the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships features some of the best tennis players in the world both in the men’s and women’s game.
The Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is a favourite venue amongst all tennis players. Ever since its inception, the tournament has featured most of tennis’ top-ranked players who have added their own spark and splendour to the existing glamour quotient of the event.
This year too, the ATP 500 event will feature the world’s best tennis players – both men as well as women – including the likes of Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych heralding the men’s line-up and Agnieszka Radwanska, Petra Kvitova, Sara Errani and Jelena Jankovic making up the top-four in the women’s playing field.
Yet another player will feature amongst these illustrious names after being awarded a wild-card to take part in the event beginning from the 17th February.
In many ways, Venus Williams’ professional stature and reputation precedes here. Ever since the American made her first appearance at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, over a decade ago, in 2002, she’s been a player whom tennis fans love to watch. Her participation in the event has produced mixed-bag results, the most memorable ones coming in 2009 and 2010 where she became the only second woman in the history of the event to win back-to-back titles.
Despite her recent slump on account of illness that saw her performances dip massively, Venus Williams’ wild-card entrance to the event nonetheless has been a huge reason for her fans to cheer about. There again, while Williams’ Australian Open campaign wasn’t exactly outstanding, she enjoyed a good start to the 2014 season making it to the finals of the ANZ Championships at Auckland, in January.
And while her health continues to be a cause of concern, at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Williams will still start out as a ‘dark horse’ quite capable of causing a few upsets.
Alongside Venus Williams, Russian Nadia Petrova’s also been given a wild-card to participate in the tournament which is conducted by Dubai Duty Free with the full-fledged support of the PM and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed.
