Dubai Shopping Festival to boost economy; Up hotel occupancy

Excitement is running high among hotels in Dubai, as they gear up for the 17th edition of Dubai Shopping Festival, offering their best deals to-date in a bid to woo the thousands of visitors, who will be flocking to the Emirate for a 32-day period , commencing January 5.

Anticipating higher occupancy levels during DSF 2012, participating hotels have come out with numerous offers to entice visitors to absorb the enriching experience of shopping in Dubai including special packages, discounted room rates, a slew of entertaining activities, and much more.

Tourists from around the world have found Dubai a very attractive destination because it offers a diversity of hotels to suit every budget and requirement, in addition to the world-famous landmarks, high quality facilities and services. Add to this the amazing experience of DSF, and you have the perfect setting for a dream shopping destination.

Dubai hotels enjoyed high occupancy rates of up to 100% during DSF 2011, and leading experts from Dubai’s hospitality industry have predicted yet another a huge boost to occupancy figures during this year’s shopping extravaganza, which is being held under the slogan “Dubai at its best” in line with the overall festival theme of? “ONE WORLD – ONE FAMILY – ONE FESTIVAL”.

The festival on an average welcomes around 3.5 million tourists each year – drawn by the range of attractive discounts offered across a wide range of well known local and global brands, an exciting calendar of family entertainment events and activities , and a range of amazing shopping-linked raffle prizes. As this year’s event also coincides with the school holidays, tourism traffic from neighbouring GCC countries is expected to rise significantly.

Burkhard Wolter, General Manager, Kempinski Hotels & Residences, Palm Jumeirah, one of the participating hotels, said that he expected DSF 2012 to draw more visitors, especially those from GCC countries. However, he said that one should look at the bigger picture, and that was of DSF being a visionary concept that had achieved the stature of an international festival and a tourism icon.

Mr. Wolter said that Kempinski Hotel and Residences Palm Jumeirah was a hotel for families and that its location on the Palm offered guests the chance to enjoy a unique location, as well as experience the best in terms of Dubai’s very attractive shopping proposition.

“We expect no less than 300 occupied rooms per night during the shopping festival’ said a confident Mr. Wolter.

“In terms of special room offers, we are offering a “Stay 4 Pay 3” promotion to GCC residents at a starting rate of only AED 1950 (subject to 10% service charge and 10% authority fee) for a Superior Two Bedroom Suite, valid from January 15 – February 15.

“We are also offering added value through various offers to families including complimentary Kids Club access with free cooking classes, arts and outdoor activities for the children, in addition to discounts on baby sitting services, special offers at Kidzania, SEGA Republic, Ski Dubai or Aqua Park, as well as complimentary in-room amenities and movies for kids. Guests will also be able to avail themselves of complimentary shuttle bus services to major malls like Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall and Ibn Battuta Mall”.

Hotel Pullman Dubai, Mall of the Emirates is offering a Shopping Getaway” package together with entertainment activities for all guests. The package includes a 3-nights stay in a Superior Room, breakfast for 2 and complimentary Wi-Fi access. Further, to highlight its direct connection to the mall, the hotel is offering a $100 gift card (per stay) from Mall of the Emirates, which can be used at over 500 stores located at the mall. The package includes a 30-minute massage for two, which guests can use after enjoying their shopping activities. The offer is priced at AED 3,558 net (inclusive of municipality fee and service charge) and valid until the end of February 2012.

Leonard Theng – Director of Sales and Marketing, Hotel Pullman Dubai, Mall of the Emirates pointed out that DSF was very important to the hotel because of its direct access to the shopping mall.

“We witnessed a significant rise in occupancy during DSF 2011, and we are very positive that we will experience a similar occupancy surge during the upcoming edition. More footfall in the mall will hopefully convert into more guests at the hotel. We predict it will be quite a busy period again for us, as Dubai Shopping Festival has always attracted tourists from all over the globe who visit the city with the sole purpose of going on a shopping spree. As DSF coincides with the GCC school holiday period, we expect occupancy rates of around 80% in Dubai”

Tom Lord, General Manager, InterContinental Dubai Festival City and Crowne Plaza Hotel Dubai Festival City said that DSF was important to the hotel as they work very closely with the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) throughout the year in promoting Dubai as an exciting destination.

“We are also part of a mixed-used development here at Dubai Festival City and our hotels are directly connected to Festival Centre, which houses over 600 retail and dining outlets. DSF is a key event in the city’s annual calendar, so it’s very important that we support it and get involved as much as we can to position Dubai Festival City as a prime spot for the best shopping, dining and family entertainment”.

The hotel is offering special room rates, starting from AED 1,000 inclusive of the service charge (Room only) or from AED 1,100 inclusive of service charge and breakfast on Superior Rooms at the InterContinental Dubai Festival City. Its sister property, the Crowne Plaza Dubai Festival City is offering Superior Rooms starting from AED 750 inclusive of service charge (room only) or from AED 850 inclusive of service charge and breakfast, in addition to special offers on food and beverage.

Al Manzil Hotel is offering a room with the Old Town view with breakfast for two starting from AED 775 plus 20% tax per room per night (subject to availability on a minimum stay of 3 nights valid from January 5 – February 5 2012) while Qamardeen Hotel is offering a room with the Old Town view with breakfast for two starting from AED 675 plus 20% tax per room per night (subject to availability on a minimum stay of 3 nights valid from January 5 – February 5 2012). In addition, guests will also receive a complimentary Privilege Book of vouchers offering great discounts at outlets at Dubai Mall as well as selected Emaar properties. Guests will also be able to avail themselves of a complimentary shuttle bus service that will take them to select shopping malls and a complimentary shuttle transfer to and from the airport.

Abdo Kayali, Complex Director of Sales and Marketing, Southern Sun Al Manzil & Southern Sun Qamardeen Hotels said that the Dubai Shopping Festival was a great marketing opportunity to showcase their hotels within and outside the UAE, since both Al Manzil Hotel and Qamardeen Hotel were just a short stroll from the Dubai Mall.
