Gone are the days laughter is the best medicine! Now it seems humour is the way to make serious issues important. It may sound like an oxymoron, but it isn’t.
The Australian train company, Metro Trains Melbourne has created this video called Dumb Ways to Die. This is an animated safety message using music and dark humour to warn people against behaving recklessly.
“Serious messages can be more effective if there was humour in it,” James Peterson a psychologist based in Sydney told Arabian Gazette. “Youth are not willing to listen to advice or any serious talk. They prefer to use humour or sarcasm. This video is directed at the youth.”
Arabian Gazette did a study using ten youth within the age group of 12 to 19. The purpose of this study was to understand how this video was perceived. First all ten were told about the safety issues which were portrayed on the video. More than 50% of them showed disinterest. Then each individual was made to watch the video separately. At first they all seemed indifferent but as it continued playing they became more and more interested. 70% of them said it was an “awesome” video, 30% said it was dumb. However all ten of them remembered at least five dumb ways to die.
“This video just like any other advertisement is a success when the message has reached the target audience,” James said. “In this case it is the young people. Based on the response the train company has received, the message is a success.”
The top favorites was the piranha bait and the guy who sold his kidney on the internet. Though it may seem funny the consequences of each action mentioned on the video has serious consequences.
Do you agree that Metro Trains Melbourne has got it right in conveying the message? We would love to know your opinions and comments!
