The Ministry of Economy (MoE) has confirmed the news that prices of essential commodities, including vegetables will be reduced up to 25% during the Holy month of Ramadan. The list includes food items such as rice, oil, flour, tea, milk, pulses, sugar, chicken and a variety of juices. The subsided food items will be displayed separately with a logo of the MoE.
Dr Hashim Al Nuwaimi, Director, Consumer Protection Department, MoE, said that “meetings have begun with distributors, suppliers and major hypermarket owners to discuss modalities for bringing down the prices of foodstuff, fruits and vegetables during the holy month of Ramadan as well as throughout the year.”
?In the last couple of years, an irregular supply of fruits and vegetables from outside of the country led to price increases here,” he added.
It is learnt that strict action will be taken against groceries and supermarkets that will violate this rule and sell items at a higher price.
