The Hangover Part II is the top film of the week in the US and Canada this weekend, as the film generated $86.5 million for Warner Bros. This is the best debut collection for a comedy ever.
The collection at the box office was good, as the 3-D feature ?Kung Fu Panda 2,? opened in the second place with $48 million in receipts.
Brandon Gray, President of Box Office Mojo, an audience reporting service said, ?The Hangover Part II? bested the comedy-debut record set by ?The Simpsons Movie? ($74 million) in 2007. The US celebrates the Memorial Day holiday this weekend, which is also one of the summer film season?s biggest for moviegoers. Total receipts for the weekend were up 49 percent from the year-ago period. That boosted sales for the year to date, though they remain down by an 8.82 percent. Hangover?s opening is sensational; it?s doing more than doubling the first movie?s opening and that?s way more than you can ask for. Typically, comedy sequels struggle.
The Hangover Part II is a sequel to the 2009 release Hangover, which had generated $45 million in its opening week and had recorded an overall collection of $467.5 million.
