Interactive handheld tablets solely for kids are now a reality, thanks to India’s HCL Infosystems.
HCL’s 7-inch tablet, the ME Champ, is fully dedicated to kids and comes with over 500 apps, which includes an educational category as well. Apart from that, there are many categories to choose from, including apps related to gaming, reading and navigation.
Launched in UAE for the first time, this year at Gitex Shopper 2013, HCL’s device aims to help with enhancing kids cognitive abilities and is something that kids of any ages can use. The tablet aims at enabling learning along with playing.
According to a recent study by Zact, a telecoms startup, a whopping 73 percent of parents surveyed said that they are concerned about “the lack of parental control of a child’s activities on mobile devices.”
HCL’s ME Champ hopes to address this concern giving it an edge over other tablets in the market.
The device can be controlled by parents. Child usage supervision can easily be done through ‘in-built’ Parental Control system. An application effectively manages to allow apps usage, online browsing and password protection etc.
A child can be prevented from accessing illegal and unwanted websites, using that Parental Control system. This should be useful in giving some peace of mind to the parents, who are of the belief that children should stay away from technology and gadgets at a young age.
In schools, education is getting modernized. From pencil and pen, to laptops and tablets, the way students are taught these days, have changed with the times. Back in April 2012 UAE had initiated ‘Smart Learning’ to improve technology in the country’s schools.
HCL hopes that parents will see how a tablet can benefit their child, by not only providing the child with entertainment, but also a device through which they can learn and study.
HCL’s Business Head of Mobility Srinath Nagarajan said that the purpose of the tablet is to provide kids with more educational content, than standard entertainment and to provide parents with a peace of mind, regarding the usage of technology.
He further added that “HCL did a research in which key parental concerns were highlighted with regards to children’s usage of tablets. One of the concerns was that it is just a device to provide entertainment, lacking educational content. HCL’s ME Champ is a device to get rid of parental anxieties.”
The nifty gadget for kids feature Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean OS) and a multi-touch capacitive screen. It also comes with a Wi-Fi connectivity, front and back camera and full HD playback. The tablet features 1 GM RAM memory and 8 GB internal storage capacity, which can be expanded to 32 GB. It is available at all leading retailers in the UAE for AED 499 and comes along with an attractive cover and stylus worth AED 50, for free.
