According to a survey conducted by specialist recruitment consultancy Robert Half UAE, Human Resources Directors are seeking to employ advanced technology as recruitment tools.
The primary factors contributing to such a paradigm shift are the unavailability of capable candidates locally and better access to better quality video-conferencing tools.
Nearly nine in 10 (87%) senior executives report challenges to recruiting skilled professionals. Individuals who seem to match the proposed job descriptions are international graduates may live thousands of kilometres away. In the attempt to hire such intellectual capital, nearly four in 10 (37%) UAE HR directors say, compared to three years ago, they have increased their use of video-conferencing to conduct interviews, representing a radical shift in the overall hiring process.
Other factors cited for the increasing trend in video-conferencing were the increased prevalence of free or low-cost tools (i.e. Skype) and the increased recruitment of out-of-town, domestic candidates. Both were highlighted by 39% of the respondents. In addition, 29% of the HR Directors said that they employ technology for shortlisting candidates for in-person interviews, while 21% quoted the reason as a means to avoid commute.
“The recruitment of expatriate candidates is commonplace in the UAE and the rise in ease and prevalence of videoconferencing tools has facilitated the recruitment process, allowing UAE businesses to attract the skilled overseas as well as out-of-town, domestic talent they need. It also provides cost savings as much of the interview process can take place while the candidate is still in his/her hometown.
It is very important that candidates treat video interviews as they would a normal face-to-face interview. Hiring managers will still be assessing physical attributes such as non-verbal communication, professional attire and confidence when being interviewed on screen.
While technology has facilitated much of the recruitment process, video conferencing should not replace in-person meetings when assessing a candidate for hire. The survey was conducted in December last year and includes responses from 75 HR Directors from Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
