Magic had an appointment at the 13th International Film Festival of Marrakech.

The jury’s leadership this year had a taste of “The Godfather” led by the legend Martin Scorsese, himself. He set magic on fire, by the torch of cinema by giving a unique lecture of great cinema interaction with the people in the most famous and popular Marrakech, Jemaa El Fnaa Square. Melita Toscan Du Plantier, director of the festival said: “He is one the greatest, if not THE greatest director of the world.”

Scorsese, beaming, greeted the crowd and said: “I’m a regular visitor to Morocco, and I’m so happy to be here!”

The public was privileged to benefit from the chic, elegant, charming show by Marion Cotillard (Oscar and Cesar awarded for her performance of Edith Piaf in La Môme’s Olivier Dahan in 2007), alongside Sharon Stone, luminous, radiant, humble and friendly. They were welcomed with a standing ovation on the podium.

Another magic spectacle of the dark haired Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone, coming to present her film Ram Leela, accompanied by Sanjay Laal Bhansali one of the established shining stars of Bombay. Terry Gilliam the director renowned for his fantastical films (“The zero theorem”, “Moonwalk” “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen”) and off the wall cinema leaves his public amazed.

Another festival favourite is directed by Said Naciri, presented as a premiere his first feature shot in Ouarzazate “Kan Ya Makan” (Music of Rachid Taha and Hoba Hoba Spirit Moroccan Rap group). Jamel Debbouze, the so-beloved child (French Moroccan comedian) who recently performed in “La Marche” the film event of France directed by Nabil Yadir, a film that retraces the history of the March of Tolerance (which took place in France in the 80’s) and is themed for immigrant children fighting against racism attacks directed at Arabs and other minorities. These youngsters walked from the south of France to Paris, denouncing racism in a peaceful march and reclaiming the declaration of human rights.

In a glittering spectacle “Thousand and One night” in Jemaa El Fnaa starring a prestigious jury chaired by Martin Scorsese, surrounded by Fatih Akin, Patricia Clarkson, Marion Cotillard, Amat Escalante, Golshifteh Farahani, Anurag Kashyap, Narjiss Nejjar, Park Chan-wook and Paolo Sorrentino awarded the winners.

Award winners were chosen from the 15 international feature films in the competition on the closing night gala.

In the category of CINÉCOLES jury chaired by Nour-Eddine Lakhmari, Astrid Berges-surrounded Frisbey, Jan Kounen, Atiq Rahimi and Sylvie Testud awarded the prize for best short film of the 10 short films Moroccan Cinécoles in competition:

The 2013 Marrakech International Film Festival, currently in its 13th edition, ended with the awards ceremony night in Morocco.

Feature films jury and Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film “Ram Leela” have showcased a modern version of Romeo and Juliet marking the opening of the Marrakech International Film Festival. Ram Leela’s lead actress Deepika Padukone graced the festival as hundreds of local Bollywood fans gathered to catch a glimpse of the actress.

The annual nine-day festival saw the movie French Film, while renowned movie personalities from around the world also attended. Besides showcasing over 110 national and international films, the film festival paid tributes to American actress Sharon Stone, French actress Juliette Binoche, Moroccan actor Mohamed Khouyi and Argentine director Fernando Solanas for their remarkable contributions to cinema.

Marrakech Film Festival 13th edition has delivered a double showcase on the screen starring on the prestigious podium with a brochette of passionate and talented stars, spreading their vibrant emotions in the Jemaa El Fnaa Square.
