Luxury facility operated by DP World wins the Middle East top industry award at World Travel Awards 2012
Dubai, United Arab Emirates, May 01, 2012:– Port Rashid, operated by global marine terminal operator DP World, has been voted the Middle East’s Leading Cruise Port, for a fifth consecutive year, at the World Travel Awards’ Middle East Ceremony 2012.
The prestigious award was received on behalf of DP World by Abdulla Bin Damithan, Director, Account Management, DP World, UAE Region, at a gala red-carpet ceremony, attended by hundreds of top level executives and professionals of the travel and leisure industry from more than 30 nations, held yesterday (April 30) at the Jebel Ali Golf Resort & Spa, Dubai.
The recognition reaffirms Dubai Cruise Terminal’s position as the cruise hub of the region. It first won the award in 2008 and has since been consistently voted as the leader in its class in the Middle East by World Travel Awards. This year, seven cruise ports of the region were nominated for the Middle East’s Leading Cruise Port Award.
In April this year, the leading Cruise Port simultaneously received and efficiently serviced five mega ocean-going cruise vessels for the first time ever, sending a clear signal that Dubai is a prime destination for cruise tourism in this region. The Port has state-of-the-art facilities that have made it one of the most tourist-friendly ports of call.
Other WTA Grand Tour 2012 regional heats are set to take place before the winners will go head-to-head in WTA’s Grand Final, which takes place on 12th December 2012.
Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said:
“Winning this coveted award for the fifth time in a row reaffirms our belief that Port Rashid’s Cruise Terminal is developing in the right direction as a significant contributor to the growth of Dubai’s tourism sector. The consistency with which Dubai has been voted the World’s Leading Cruise Port at the World Travel Trade Awards confirms our long-term commitment to developing Port Rashid further as the regional cruise destination of choice. We are honoured by this recognition and we thank our strategic partner in promoting cruise tourism, the Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing (DTCM), for their important role in the success of Port Rashid as a cruising destination.”
In October, DP World announced plans to expand the Port Rashid cruise terminal facilities in order to strengthen its leading position as the largest cruise hub in the Middle East. DP World’s vision for Port Rashid is to eventually be able to serve as many as seven cruise vessels at one time.
