The workplace is where we spend the majority of our time, it’s also the place where we are encouraged to be as creative, motivated and productive as we can be. Staff need an environment that stimulates and inspires them in order to bring out the best in each person.
The look and feel of the work environment plays a huge role in the emotional state of those working there, which in turn has an impact on their productivity and motivation levels. This knowledge is considered Productivity 101 by many CEO’s.
Here are some simple tips to enhance worker productivity:
1. Make the workplace a homeplace
Encourage employees to bring something personal into the workplace. It costs you nothing and helps to create familiarity, comfort and confidence, as well as generating conversation and community-building.
2. Review the number of desks used
Think about how many desks are used throughout the whole day. Would a booth, hot desking pod or a standing work station work for some people? This can often free 60 percent of the space as well as discouraging people from collecting paper and clutter.
3. Watch the team at work
Everybody’s different, so think about what environment works to bring out the best in each member of the team. Instead of asking, just watch them. Most people are unaware of what works best for them, so take the time to watch where most of the office is used or where people are when they are most productive and at their best. Think about what happens when you are in a restaurant next to another couple – you and your companion will speak in whispers until the place gets nosier and busier. Office spaces work the same way, if you keep energy and business there, then people talk freely and interact because the background noise gives them privacy that silence
5. Be clear about the purpose of the office space
If you’re a startup, you have probably been working out of coffee shops, hotel lobbies and home offices for a period of time, so why have you opted for permanent office space now? For existing offices, why are you looking to renovate now? Is it to provide your team with a base they can call home? Or is it your showcase to new and existing clients?
