Story: Opening of new Eco-friendly mall
Qatar sees itself as the ‘greenest’ gulf nation there is, re-enforcing this fact with various developments happening in this oil-rich nation. Continually adapting Eco-friendly methods,Qatar will soon become the most sustainable nation of the future.
The latest attempt in this pursuit is the opening of Qatar’s first Eco-friendly mall.
Parco mall, which is a joint venture between Dubai?s Parco Group and Doha?s Foodworld Group, opened in Doha, last week. The mall?s general manager, Moncy Thomas, explained that what made it unique was its ?green? focus.
?This is a ?green mall? which features a vertical garden and a full size aquarium. The vertical garden has over 2000 tropical plants which are capable of producing oxygen equivalent to 15 trees,? he said.
Having a total area of 100m2, the vertical garden has an automated irrigation, ventilation and lighting system containing over 5000 individual parts. Its estimated air movement is 13,608 litres per hour.
“With its no smoking policy and the vertical garden, Parco Mall is likely to provide a clean and healthy environment for anyone visiting the mall,” added Moncy.
With a total area of 5,772 sq m, Parco Mall, which is located in Mamoura, has 58 shops spread on a four-tiered building.
“The essentially three-floor neighbourhood mall will house Food World, Doha Bank counter, Al Dar exchange, ATMs, Qtel pay centre, pharmacy, laundry, beauty saloon, ladies and kids’ fashion accessories, a kids studio, toy shop, bookstore, travel agency and a play zone for children,” Moncy said.
A feature in the food court is the custom-built giant size marine aquarium.
The giant marine aquarium at the Food Court, which is custom built and flown directly to Doha, is also sure to catch the attention of every visitor to the new mall.
“Parco Mall is not just another mall in Doha. It offers world class shops, services and facilities for the entire family,” he added.
A new organization has been set up in the nation which will pursue a mission of having the most ‘green buildings’ in the world.
The new Gulf Organization for Research & Development (GO for RD) has outlined its vision to establish Qatar as the Gulf?s ?capital of green?buildings?.
?The organization aims to ensure a healthy, rich and diverse environment for present and future generations in support of the environmental pillar of Qatar National Vision 2030,” said Dr Youssef Al-Horr, co-founder and chairman of the GO for RD.
Recently, the real estate sector has witnessed the launch of numerous projects from buildings to large urban developments.? Adopting Qatar Sustainability Assessment System’s (QSAS) stringent standards provides potential residents of these projects not only with high-quality lifestyles, but built with methods that promote sustainable usage of natural resources, he said.
Early last month, the GO for RD and the Qatar Olympic committee (QOC) had signed an MoU towards establishing environmentally sustainable sporting venues.
?We have set our sights on Qatar being at the forefront of environmental sustainability in the GCC near future, and we will continue to pursue strategic partnerships with local and regional entities to fulfill that goal. With key partners like the QOC, we will see that vision become reality sooner than later,? Dr Al-Horr concluded
Being a nation literally in the desert, Qatar will soon stand as an example to the world, that adopting Eco-friendly, sustainable methods is absolutely achievable.
With green stadium plans, and Eco-friendly malls, it will not come as a surprise if other gulf countries and the world at large will follow the steps of this small gulf nation.
