We review the Pesto and Pistou Mediterranean autumn menu at the
Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Downtown Dubai
It’s quite evident that Mövenpick isn’t your regular chain of hotels and resorts. The Swiss brand has been known to incorporate innovative concepts to maintain their brand equity. When the late hotelier Ueli Prager founded the brand in 1948, he had a pretty straightforward modus operandi, “Doing normal things in an extraordinary manner” solely emphasizing on simplicity, commitment and innovation.
Twice a year, Mövenpick launches a global menu of several experimental dishes to let their guests experience something different.
For October 2019, Mövenpick decided to incorporate an innovative range of pestos (Italian) and pistous (French) to create seven unique dishes that ought to give your pallets a gastronomic mega bonanza. The campaign in Mövenpick Hotel Apartments Downtown Dubai which is headed by Chef Parimal Kumar includes dishes like seafood soup with tarragon pistou, black cod with pesto rosso and bundt cake with chocolate-mint pesto.
Apparently, even when each Mövenpick property is thousand miles away, months and months of preparations are done with call meetings discussing each nitty gritty details ensuring the campaign is delivered with quality par excellence.
To get a better understanding of the concept, Pesto and Pistou are two different versions of a delightful sauce based on olive oil, basil and cheese. The Italian version which comes from the city of Genoa is a blend of garlic, basil, grated pecorino cheese and and olive oil. The French version however is a provencal cold sauce with ingredients that might seem similar to its Italian counterpart but without the pine nuts and with/without cheese.
Ahi Tuna with Olive and Eggplant Pesto
For someone who goes bonkers over seafood this was a delightful dish with an explosion of flavors in my mouth. A simple pan-seared yellow fin tuna fillet served with a side of ratatouille, black tapenade and pine nuts.
The fillet was cooked to perfection without being over or under cooked. The ratatouille had a very homemade feel to it, something that is similar to what your mom would cook when you need a quick bite.
Seafood Soup with Tarragon Pistou
This dish though looks very simple actually has the entire ocean in it. I mean the plethora of seafood in it is simply mind boggling from Octopus, Shrimps, Clams and so much more. It has a very savory taste to it with a hint of some unique spices. There is a bit of vanilla in it so you can imagine what a deadly combination that would make to enhance the flavor of the stock.
Black Cod with Pesto Rosso
The cod is something that takes a good amount of experience to perfect. The dish might seem a little plain for someone who is used to having a lot of spices and flavors in their meals but at the same time pretty satisfying for someone who wants a simple yet elegantly prepared seafood meal. Served with a risotto that is made from aged Acquerello rice, it actually has the same texture and feel to a Spanish seafood paella.
Corn Chicken Breast with Bell Pepper Pesto
If you’re a fan of fried chicken, this is your dish with a little added twist to it. Crispy from the outside while being juicy and succulent from the inside, let’s just say this truly does feel like at home. You’ve got different kinds of peas, a basmati rice galette and bitter-sweet yellow-red pesto on the side packing a ton of flavor.
Overall, we were very impressed by Mövenpick’s selection of items, their excellent hospitality and homely ambiance. We definitely recommend our readers to go check the place out and prepare yourself for a gastronomic adventure.
The Mövenpick Ice-Cream Experience
Though this isn’t a part of the Pesto and Pistou menu, we had to give it a special mention in our review. At the end of our meal, we were treated with what could possibly be the best ice-cream I’ve ever had in my life. Believe me, I’ve reviewed a ton of restaurants so not even exaggerating a little bit.
Imagine an ice-cream that is so creamy and packed in flavor that with each spoon of it you just want more and more and more of it. Mövenpick didn’t just go for some mainstream conventional selection of flavors. They made these from scratch experiment on different combination of flavors.
Two flavors. Espresso Croquant and Caramelita are worth dying for. Take my word for it. Espresso Croquant which would be a bliss for all you coffee fans out there is so rich and flavorful, I guarantee you won’t stop with a single scoop.
Caramelita as the name suggests is a caramel based ice-cream that has a butterscotch type of taste it but is also much more than that. Mövenpick has their ice-creams available at all their properties as well as a few retail carts across the city.
Bien is also known for a very delicious and affordable business lunch set AED 69 for a three course meal with a soft beverage.
