Dubai Duty Free retained its position as the largest single airport retail operation in the world in terms of turnover, which in 2010 was Dhs4.66 billion (US$1.27 billion).

Dubai Duty Free has recorded a 16.6 per cent increase in sales to Dh2.54 billion ($698 million) sale during the first half of the year over the same period last year.

The top three selling categories continued to be Perfumes, Liquor and Gold.

Perfume sales increasing by 20 per cent to reach Dh361 million ($99 million) for the first half of the year and Gold sales up by 24 per cent to top Dh290 million ($79 million).

Sales of Electronic goods shot up by 22 per cent for the first half of the year to reach Dh196 million ($54 million) while Watch sales rose by an impressive 41 per cent to Dh172 million ($47 million).

Spending trends across all three Terminals continued to increase with duty free sales in Terminal 2, increasing by 31 per cent for the first half of the year. Sales in Terminals 1 and 3 rose by 15 per cent and 16 per cent respectively while overall Arrival sales rose by 16 per cent.

Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free, said, “We are extremely pleased that 2011 has shaped up to be such a positive year for the operation. We have seen consumer spending increase across most categories with significant spikes in luxury sector products. We have also seen significant increases in sales across all three Terminals for both departing and arriving passengers, all of which is encouraging for the year-end figures.”

Dubai airport, the chief transit hub for the GCC, plans to expand its retail offering by 50 percent next year with the opening of concourse 3, with an additional 8,000 square metres of duty free stores.

Regional Director for Colliers Middle East Stuart Gissing added that an increase in passenger dwelling time at airports has triggered investment in the ?terminal journey? by airport operators.

The Dubai Duty Free is recognized as one of the best airport retailers in the world. They walked away with the award for ?Middle East Travel Retailer of the Year? for the eleventh time, at the recent DFNI Asia Pacific Awards ceremony.
