The Saudi Arabian government is hashing out a new residency permit plan for the expats living and working in the Kingdom, local daily Al Madinah reported Wednesday.

The new residency plan would allow the foreign workers to have the validity of their residency permits extended to five years from current one-year residency tenure.

The daily claimed that the Directorate General of Passports was giving final touches on the new residency permit but refrained from giving out a time-frame.

The expats currently have to renew their residency permits every year for a fee.

The proposed move has sprung a wave of joy among over nine million expats community in the Kingdom who had to undergo mental and financial stress due to residency laws in Saudi Arabia.

The plan is expected to come into effect very soon, however no time-frame was spelled out by the Directorate General of Passports, KSA.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a host to a massive foreigners community, most of which come from South Asia, and makes up one third of the Kingdom’s total population.
