Media reports coming from Riyadh suggest Saudi Ministry of Labour is considering a two-day weekend for the private sector that will come into effect from next year.
A labour ministry source told Dammam-based Al-Sharq newspaper that a panel is looking into the issue and would release its findings in the next six months. About 80% of private sector organisations have already given their nod to the proposal.
Several private companies have asked to increase the daily working hours to nine hours from the current eight, in order to agree to the change, the ministry source added.
The report said it it was unlikely that companies would suffer any financial loss as a result of the switch.
Last month, Saudi Arabia announced it is considering switching the weekend for government employees from Thursday-Friday to Friday-Saturday, however it is yet to reach any consensus.
