Siemens, the global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering operating in the energy, infrastructure and cities, industry and healthcare sectors, has signed a complete turnkey solution contract with Qatar Steel Company to build a high-voltage substation.

The 220/66/33-kilovolt (kV) substation will feature advanced technology and replace an existing facility within 14 months, ensuring more efficient and reliable power supply to Qatar Steel’s complex at Mesaieed Industrial City. The contract is valued at QR138m ($38m)

“This project is further testament to the long and successful history of Siemens supplying power transmission solutions in Qatar,” said Wolfgang Braun, Head of Power Transmission at Siemens Middle East. “We are delighted to have been awarded this turnkey substation project with Qatar Steel and look forward to further cooperation with the company.”

Under the contract, Siemens will supply Qatar Steel with 220/66/33-kV transformers and cables, 66kV-gas insulated switchgear (GIS), 33-kV switchgear, protection system, substation control and monitoring system (SCMS), telecommunication systems, civil engineering and the substation building. The project, the first to be awarded to Siemens Power Transmission by Qatar Steel, will be executed on an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) basis. The upgrade will enable Qatar Steel, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Industries Qatar, to replace its old substation that utilizes earlier technology in order to enable efficient and reliable power supply.

Ali Bin Hassan Al-Muraikhi, Director and General Manager of Qatar Steel, said: “We are very pleased to have signed this contract with Siemens, and to develop a strategic business partnership with a world-leading supplier of services and solutions in power generation, transmission and distribution.”

“As Qatar continues to invest heavily in developing its infrastructure and industries, Siemens is pleased to be a partner of choice for a broad range of projects, especially in the energy sector,” Dietmar Siersdorfer, CEO, Siemens Energy, Middle East. “Once again, innovative technologies and solutions from Siemens proved to be the right fit for Qatar’s growth ambitions, which we aspire to continue supporting in the future.”

Siemens’ portfolio for efficient power transmission and distribution ranges from extra-high to low voltage, enabling the company to provide comprehensive support to the region’s energy infrastructure, which is undergoing a major transformation amid rapidly-growing demand for electricity.
