South Sudan To Build ‘Stronger Ties’ With UAE

In 1994,South Africa celebrated the departure of apartheid that was legalized in 1948. Like colonialism and imperialism,South Sudan on Saturday welcomed its independence after almost half a century in bondage. The independence is seen by analysts as the most significant development in modern African history since the end of apartheid nearly two decades ago.

South Sudanese citizens, international dignitaries and the world’s newest?president, General Salva Kiir Mayardit, convened in the new country capital of Juba to celebrate the birth of a nation, on Saturday. It became the world’s newest country with a raucous street celebration at midnight.

Dignitaries from across the world, including the UK Foreign Secretary William Hague and the former US secretary of state Colin Powell were in the South?s capital Juba to attend the independence ceremony.

The Vice President of independent South Sudan, Riek Machar, had presented an invitation to president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to attend the official declaration of the new state on July 9th.

The invitation was delivered to UAE state Minister for Foreign Affairs Anwar Mohammed Gargash during his meeting with Machar and the accompanying delegation.

Also present at the ceremony were Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Meles Zenawi?, Sudan’s President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, African Union Chairperson and Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, among others.

First Embassy in the GCC in UAE

UAE official news agency (WAM) said the two sides explored the future of the relations between the UAE and the South Sudan and ways to boost them in all fields.

South Sudan will set up its first Embassy in the Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States (GCC) in the UAE, Vice President of the Government of South Sudan Dr Riek Machar Teny, said at a press conference in Dubai last week. He added that his nascent country will also open the trade representative office in Dubai to promote the trade in South Sudan.

Dr Teny, who was on two-day tour in the UAE, revealed that the UAE will host South Sudan Investment Conference in October, adding that the event will be attended by a number of South Sudan ministers and the UAE officials. He hoped that President of South Sudan General Salva Kiir Mayardit shall attend the conference.

He said the UAE is a financial and economic powerhouse, indicating that there are untapped investment opportunities inSouth Sudan, such as tourism, transport, oil industry (refineries and pipelines) and energy projects that the UAE could utilize.

He added these projects will be presented at the conference. Dr Teny extended invitation to Emirati investors to benefit from the untapped investment opportunities. He revealed that he had held meetings with a number of UAE officials, among others, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash and State Minister Reem Al Hashimi.

The talks tackled ways to boost the cooperation between the UAE and the Government of South Sudan. ‘The people of South Sudan look forward to building stronger ties with the UAE,’ Dr Teny remarked.

This visit came days ahead of the Declaration of South Sudan Independence on July 9, to discuss cooperation in different fields, indicating that the Government of South Sudan plans to launch an air route between Juba and the UAE.
