The Fight over Carbon

The global airline industry has warned the European Union against a plan on charging airlines (in Europe) for emissions from 2012, in a war of words. The EU in a solo effort is aiming to include the aviation industry in Europe?s trading scheme for emissions from next year and force airlines to get permits for carbon emissions, above a certain level.

‘They (the EU) are ignoring international law,’ Giovanni Bisignani, director general of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), said in Singapore.

‘We have a special place of dishonor on the IATA wall of shame for the European Union and its parliament,’ he told industry leaders at the opening of IATA’s annual general meeting.
