She said ‘YAS’! British man proposes to girlfriend live on stage at Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
This morning Yas Marina Circuit witnessed a joust of pre-marital bliss, as a British man proposed to his girlfriend live on stage in the Main Oasis area. Birmingham native Mathew Laurent, 35, went down on one knee and asked his unsuspecting and equally surprised girlfriend to marry him as hundreds of racegoers watched.
Lucky for the crowd and Mathew, Miss. Danielle Cooke, 33, said yes and the audience cheered them on. Congratulations and jubilation were passed around.
Speaking backstage after the proposal, Laurent revealed that he had planned this secretly weeks ahead, had approached Abu Dhabi Motorsport Management and they had agreed to help him plan his surprise for his girlfriend, in advance.
Cooke confessed that she had no idea about this proposal or that they were going to attend the 2014 Formula 1 Etihad Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. She only found out ‘when the taxi pulled up in front of the gates at the circuit this morning’. She said that “I was really shocked in the beginning, but once the initial shock wore off, I was a really happy woman indeed.”
Laurent revealed that his fiancée never knew anything about the surprise and he managed to keep it well hidden from her. He was initially extremely nervous going on stage and proposing her, but once everything worked out in his favour, he was really thrilled in the end. All’s well that ends well, at Yas!
